Over the past three decades, I have
occasionally discussed the origins of the breed in Spain with fellow fans; even
back in the 1990s, some were impressed and delighted by the information I
shared on the subject. On this final day of September 2026, I once again
discussed the breed's origins in Spain, this time with Manuel from Seville, a
wonderful "old-school" fan who has enjoyed the breed since the early
2000s. Despite his long history with the breed in Spain, he was genuinely
surprised and delighted by the details I provided, as he had been unaware of
them, and he expressed great appreciation that I had chosen to share this
information with him.
Shortly after hanging up the phone with
Manuel, I realized how important it is to ensure that the fans are informed
about the breed's origins in Spain, information I had never fully appreciated
or thought to document in a report, perhaps because I had been so personally
involved in that history. Just as I document various other aspects of the breed
in my articles, I believe the story of its origins in Spain should also be
recorded in writing; this ensures that the fans remain informed and, crucially,
that this information is not lost to the passage of time. I consider this type
of information, like that found in the many reports on the breed I have
produced since the 1980s, similar to the work of other authors, to be part of
the very heritage of the breed and its fans, especially given that Spain played
such a vital role in the breed's origins; https://www.fiapbt.net/origins.html
Authentic or purebred American Pit Bull
Terriers were introduced to Spain in 1982 by Francisco Fernández Llanio, a Cuban politician and Consul
destinated in Spain, popularly known among breed enthusiasts as Pancho.

Rubio of Tex Mex.

In that era of 1982 and from the Pancho´s
hand, the first Spanish fans to own authentic or purebred American Pit Bull
Terriers emerged: Rafael Rubio in Madrid (with the "Pirañas" kennel
name, later changed to "Tex Mex"), Sediles in Madrid ("Capitán
Sediles"), and Juan in Asturias, known as "Tatacho"
("Gauvin", later changed to "Buzne's Kennels"). A little
later, as the passion for this wonderful breed began to flow through our veins,
others joined the ranks, such as Antonio Martínez in Seville, Alfredo Leal in
Valencia ("Leal's Kennels"), and Mar Bartolomé and myself in Madrid
("Villa Liberty Kennels").
Time flies, and it takes its toll; of all
those mentioned, I believe that, with the exception of us, everyone has since
left the world of dogs due to various circumstances.
Having looked at the ORIGINS of the American Pit Bull Terrier in Spain, let us now
briefly review the HISTORY of the
breed in our country:
- On June 23, 1995, Mar and I had the honor of founding the Spanish American Pit Bull Terrier Club (CEAPBT). It was the first
official organization for the breed established in Spain. Once approved by the
Ministry of the Interior and subsequently published in the Official State
Gazette (B.O.E.), the American Pit Bull Terrier gained official status as a dog
breed. This occurred despite the vile, malicious misinformation spread by the
Royal Canine Society of Spain (RSCE) and others who, acting purely out of
self-interest, have damaged, and desire continue to damage, the image of the
breed and its fans. At the CEAPBT,
we organize various Sporting events, Conformation shows, Courses, Interviews,
Talks, Produce the Club Magazine, among other activities, to reveal the truth
and the positive face of the breed to the deeply misinformed and ignorant society
in which we live.
- In 1997,
I had the honor of publishing the first specialized book on the American Pit
Bull Terrier breed in Spain, titled *El
American Pit Bull Terrier*.
- On April 30, 1998, Mar and I had the honor of founding the *Asociación Española para la Defensa del American Pit Bull Terrier en el
Mundo* (Spanish Association for the Defense of the American Pit Bull
Terrier Worldwide), thereby enabling us to more effectively defend the
interests of the breed and its fans everywhere.
- In 1999,
the first official ADBA club in Spain
was established in Madrid, holding its inaugural ADBA Conformation Show on June
19, 1999, in Los Hueros, Madrid. "RED
RAMONA" won her female category; she also bested the top male in his
category and defeated the winners of all other categories, ultimately emerging
as the overall winner among the 96 APBTs participating in that year's ADBA
Conformation event, all of which held official ADBA pedigrees. Thus, "RED RAMONA" won the coveted ADBA Best In Show (B.I.S.) The judge presiding over the
Conformation Show was Mr. Hank Greenwood,
the current President of the American
Dog Breeders Association (ADBA)
- Back in 1999, during the drafting of the disastrous, unjust, and
discriminatory "PPP Law"
(spanish BSL), President Aznar’s
administration, specifically within the former Ministry of Agriculture,
Fisheries and Food (MAPA), had already decided to include a BAN on the American Pit Bull Terrier in the new legislation. This
decision was based on accepting malicious misinformation provided by Manuel
Martín, the RSCE president, as can be seen in the text preceding Document 18
and following Document 23 at the following link: https://www.iadcro.com/pasosLeyppp.html After our intervention since the Spanish Association for the Defense of the
American Pit Bull Terrier Worldwide, thanks to god, fortunately that BAN never materialized.
-
On April 27, 2000, the International
American Pit Bull Terrier Federation
(FIAPBT) was founded. I had the
honor of being elected by its constituent associations and clubs to serve as
president, a role I continue to hold today with great pride and enthusiasm,
dedicated to the proper promotion and defense of the American Pit Bull Terrier
breed wherever needed, for as long as god wills it.
-
In 2010, ADBA ESP was established as the second official ADBA club in Spain; based in Valencia, it hosted
numerous events dedicated to the proper and appropriate promotion of the breed.
-
In 2026, ADBA SPAIN was created as the third
official ADBA club in Spain, also based in Valencia. On October 3, 2026,
the club successfully held its inaugural event dedicated to the proper
promotion of the breed: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61576954373858
Despite
the difficulties and obstacles the breed has faced in Spain since its
introduction back in 1982, the passion and love felt by true fans have and will
continue to far outweigh any malicious intent to harm animals, and especially
to harm a breed as noble and wonderful as the American Pit Bull Terrier.
Whenever possible, we will stand in defense and support of these little angels,
ADBA SPAIN, and everyone who shares
this commitment to such a just cause...
