About a
month ago, someone, I imagine a follower of the FIAPBT or Villa Liberty
Kennels, told me that this photograph wasn't of Tudor's "DIBO" but rather of Tudor's "RED BILL", just like that, without giving me any
further details. I didn't reply right away because I thought they were joking.
However, the next day, that same follower deleted their comment and
disappeared. At first, I didn't believe the comment, since this photograph, of
the best American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT or Pit Bull) of all times, past and present, has been an icon for
most, if not all, fan enthusiasts for almost 70 years. This photograph has been
observed, respected, and admired by the most influential dogmen of the breed
worldwide. This photograph was a standard-bearer for the breed itself and its
fans, and it was published in various magazines, books, articles, and so on. I
myself have even published this photograph in my books, as you can see in the
following photograph from the book titled "El
American Pit Bull Terrier" from 1997, where my "RED PIT" appears on the cover. I have also published
this photograph, supposedly of Tudor's
"DIBO" in several of my writings, reports, etc., without ever
considering that this photograph might not be of the real Tudor's "DIBO".
After the
enthusiast made the comment and didn't reveal the ending of what I thought was
a joke, but instead disappeared, a slight curiosity about what he had said
arose within me, prompting me to investigate the matter. I began my research by
looking in my old book, specifically on page 28, where I found the two most
important photographs of Tudor's
"DIBO" held by the breed's historical "museum." I studied them with unprecedented attention for almost an hour,
visualizing and comparing them, and... Bam!!! I found differences
between the two photographs, differences camouflaged by their age and the black
and white color of the images, differences as if they weren't actually the same
dog. This caused what had begun as a slight curiosity to grow exponentially, to
the point that it became a necessity…

Tudor´s “RED BILL” FIAPBT Pedigree Online: https://www.fiapbtpedigree.com/imprimir_ficha.php?idm=en&criterio=1728
I
started researching in my personal library on the breed, then searched the
internet for data and old Pit Bull photos, especially of Tudor's "RED BILL", since the enthusiast in question claimed
that the Pit Bull in the main photograph was him and not Tudor's "DIBO", in this way, to try to get to the bottom
of this, and lo and ´Behold!
I found the photograph of Tudor's "RED BILL"!!! It is, without a doubt, the
photograph of Tudor's "RED BILL".
It's a photograph from the July 1958 issue of Your Friend & Mine magazine, edited by the legendary Pete Sparks. This photograph of Tudor's "RED BILL" is framed
within an advertisement created and paid for directly by Earl Tudor, so there's no room for doubt that this photograph is
indeed, with all due guarantees, of
Tudor's "RED BILL".
By meticulously comparing this photograph of Tudor's
"RED BILL", belonging to the magazine Your Friend & Mine of July
1958, with the photograph at the top of this report, which we, the fans of the
breed from anywhere on the planet, have always believed to be Tudor's
"DIBO", we are going to find several proofs that indeed the
photograph at the top of this report is of Tudor's "RED BILL" and not
of Tudor's "DIBO" as had been believed for almost 70 years;
The dogs in
the two photographs, which are supposedly not the same, appear in a similar
pose, making comparison easier. They both have the same collar. Both have their
left ear slightly drooping forward due
to a faulty or heavy ear crop. The real photos of Tudor's "DIBO" show a clean, symmetrical, and upright ear crop, as can be clearly
seen in the lower photograph, as well as a more robust skull structure and
wider jaws than those of Tudor's
"RED BILL".
Tudor's "RED BILL" clearly has a large white patch on
its chest that extends slightly towards its right shoulder. The real Tudor's "DIBO" had a smaller,
more symmetrical, and centered white patch on its chest. Tudor's "RED BILL" has a peculiar characteristic: a
charming, wavy wrinkle at the corner of its mouth, like a smile. This is the
same wrinkle that can be seen in the photograph of the supposed Tudor's "DIBO".
Although I'm
not a fan of AI, quite the opposite, as a complement to this research I'm going
to show the color photographs taken with AI, because, although the results of
the photographs taken with AI are obviously not the original or real
photographs, the AI does have a good degree of accuracy in
showing the small details of the original photograph and these small details
are revealed even better when projected in color than when seen in their
original black and white, providing me with information and clearing up some
doubts.
In the
featured photograph at the top of this report, the one that conveys
disappointment and was created using AI, the dog has subtle white markings on
the toes of its front paws. The real Tudor's
"DIBO" had very little white on his front paws, which were almost
entirely solid buckskin. Tudor's
"RED BILL" has a slightly longer tail, set higher, than his
father Tudor's "DIBO".
However, we must also consider that Tudor's
"RED BILL" being a direct son of Tudor's "DIBO", inherited much of his father's structure.
Both dogs looked similar enough to pass for the same specimen in low-resolution
black and white photographs from that now distant era, but to successfully and definitively close this
controversial debate, let's look at some objective and official information
I found today on the matter. In this way, I
can state with complete certainty and confidence, without fear of being wrong,
based on all the evidence presented, that the photograph featured at the
top of this report, the one that fan enthusiasts worldwide always we have
believed was Tudor's "DIBO",
really is a photograph of his son Tudor's "RED BILL":
During Earl Tudor's golden age,
the American Dog Breeders
Association (ADBA) relied
exclusively on written descriptions submitted by breeders through the mail to
issue pedigree certificates. The ADBA's
registration records for Tudor's
"RED BILL" specify a noticeable scar on one of his hind legs and
the drooping left ear. The ADBA's official record for Tudor's "DIBO" states that the dog had multiple combat
scars on his face and chest, but both
ears were perfectly erect.
The coat
coloring seen in the AI photographs is misleading, as Tudor's "DIBO" had a buckskin
coat with a black mask and nose, while Tudor's
"RED BILL" was a Red Nose
with a more prominent reddish hue.
This image
of Tudor's "RED BILL" was
mistakenly presented to the world as an image of his father Tudor's "DIBO", the most
important American Pit Bull Terrier of all time in terms of breed reproduction,
and therefore, as the image of the Pit
Bull most important of the breed itself worldwide.
After this
disappointment, I believe there is no greater disappointment for oneself and
for everyone else than failing to acknowledge the error or reveal the truth of
what happened after becoming aware of it. For this reason, morally and to
contribute to the truth of the breed, I feel obligated to clarify the enormous
error that occurred almost 70 years ago with this photograph.
@ How did the error
occur and how did it spread?
While
thoroughly investigating the authenticity of the photographs, I've had the
opportunity to access a considerable amount of information related to how the
error in the photograph featured at the top of today's report occurred and
spread.
Although the
error had existed for some time, the
main driver of its global dissemination was the books published by Richard
Stratton starting in the 1970s.
In his
firsts and most successful encyclopedic books on the breed, Stratton included the photograph of Tudor's "RED BILL" labeled as
Tudor's "DIBO".
https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=520995430569337&set=a.155145083821042
Since the
internet didn't exist back then and printed sources were scarce, for fans of the breed that image became the
"official truth". Entire breed fans generations we grew up
associating Tudor's "RED BILL's" face with his father's name, Tudor's "DIBO".
At this point, some would blame Richard Stratton for the aforementioned error and the widespread
confusion it generated among breed enthusiasts, unfairly settling the matter in
that way. I must say in his defense, and more specifically in defense of the
truth and what I consider correct, that after having thoroughly and objectively
investigated this matter over the past few weeks, it should be known that from
1920 onwards, long before the existence of Stratton's books and other encyclopedic books on the breed
of that era, some Pit Bull breeders and stud owners, including Earl Tudor himself, as a basic advertising tool to inform
breed enthusiasts about the various genetic lines they worked with, printed
what were called "Pedigree Cards" or "Stud Cards" on cardstock and sent them by mail to clients
interested in acquiring the genetic information of their studs to decide
whether or not to breed their respective females, or simply to promote
available puppies. The "Pedigree Cards" were a tool with an advertising function similar to
the current FIAPBT Pedigree Online for the breed. Commercial advertising for
breeders at that time depended entirely on the Pedigree Cards. Even before 1920, a few breeders of the breed,
such as Frank
G. Henry, were already placing their own
advertisements in local magazines about dogs in general, as can be seen in the
following link; https://www.fiapbt.net/henry..html
* FIAPBT Pedigree Online, for genetic Control, Information and public Share

After Tudor's "DIBO"
died in 1958, Earl Tudor and other breeders he trusted continued to sell the
genetic offspring of Tudor's
"DIBO" by promoting them with the use of Pedigree Cards. The true photograph of Tudor's "DIBO" was very old and not very clear because it
was taken with an old, low-quality camera, furthermore, since Tudor's "DIBO" had already
passed away, Earl Tudor decided to
promote his descendants (his studs and the puppies he offered for sale) by
using a new, more modern, and higher-quality photograph on their Pedigree Cards. This new photograph was
more marketable because of its more attractive pose. As you know, I'm referring
to the photograph featured in today's article, which we all thought was of Tudor's "DIBO", but in fact
was of his son Tudor's "RED
BILL". The text on the Pedigree
Card wasn't lying, as it stated
"Ch DIBO Line," and Tudor's "RED BILL" was indeed an
extraordinary representative of his sire Tudor's "DIBO" bloodline.
I believe Earl Tudor didn't
intentionally try to mislead the fancier, but the advertising was ambiguous for
buyers at the time. It didn't explicitly state that Tudor's "RED BILL" was his sire Tudor's "DIBO", but it did create significant confusion
among most fanciers, who directly associated the photograph of Tudor's "RED BILL" with the
name of his sire's bloodline advertised on his Pedigree Card, "Ch DIBO Line".
Thus, this is how the enormous confusion among enthusiasts and breeders of
the breed arose and began from the 1960s onward, leading to the same error
among book writers, report writers, magazine editors, advertisers, etc., as
happened to Richard Stratton, Terry L. Williams, myself, and
logically to most, if not all, enthusiasts of the breed around the world, since
this error was reflected in numerous books, magazines, reports, and various
publications from that time to the present day.
For this reason, I considered it important and necessary to clarify this
matter to avoid future misunderstandings, since many enthusiasts and veteran
breeders who acquired erroneous information starting in the 1960s with the
aforementioned Pedigree Cards, and
later by purchasing books by Richard
Stratton and other authors in the 1970s and 80s, will blindly defend,
without debate or any valid doubt, that the photograph featured in this report,
that of Tudor's "RED BILL"
is indeed the long-standing photograph of Tudor's
"DIBO". I believe that, as with everything, having an open mind
is beneficial for everyone, but especially for oneself.
I regret and understand that this matter I bring up today may cause great
disappointment among the fans. I too have felt very disappointed to learn that
the photograph we had admired so much throughout our lives does not correspond
to our idol. However, I believe there is a greater disappointment than that,
which is when someone knows the Truth and, even so, for whatever reason,
prefers to continue maintaining the lie.
Tudor's "DIBO" has also been the subject of another
misconception among breed enthusiasts, a much more serious error stemming from
the same dynamics as the previous one. I say much more serious because the
confusion and unease generated by this misconception has unfairly and
negatively impacted the treatment of hundreds of thousands of extraordinary and
healthy Pit Bulls worldwide, as if they were defective dogs to be eliminated.
This other misconception has been circulating among many breed enthusiasts from
the mid-20th century to the present day as if it were an absolute truth, which
it is far from. I believe that, for the good of the breed community and
especially for the good of all those dogs affected by this supposed error, it
must also be clarified once and for all with the utmost rigor of knowledge and
science.
It's
important to know, because many don't, that Tudor's "DIBO", the finest example of the breed of all
time, possessed the best and most effective bite for prey work, I'm referring
to what's known as a PREY and GRIP bite.
Out of ignorance and without ill intent, enthusiasts back then, and even some
today in 2026, have mistakenly referred to this type of gripping bite as UNDERSHOT BITE or PROGNATHISM, out of habit or tradition and I say misnamed because PROGNATHISM is not a quality or virtue
at all; it's the scientific name for a significant genetic defect that eliminates
effectiveness in Prey Work, even putting the affected animal at risk of
fracturing its jaws. The PREY and GRIP
bite is the correct name for the extraordinary quality and natural virtue
of PREY and GRIP bite shown by Tudor's
"DIBO", as well as many other of the best specimens of all time
of this noble and wonderful canine breed as I detail and explain in the report
that I attach below;
@ PROGNATISM in the American Pit Bull Terrier, YES or NO? https://www.fiapbt.net/typesofbite.html
Al Brown with Tacoma Jack 1932,
Salen Oregón. Jhon Fonseca, Al Brown and the Reverend Howard Heinzl.
Al Brown was a respected veteran and great
dogman, historian, and breeder of the extraordinary and old Tacoma Ramification
Genetic or bloodline, many of his dogs descended from Henry's
dogs.
Al Brown was also a breed historian who wrote
based on his own field research to minimize the margin of error in his books
and chronicles.
Among Al Brown's close circle of friends were
John Fonseca and the Heinzl
brothers, Bob and especially
Reverend Howard Heinzl.
Al Brown, after having examined Tudor's "DIBO" on several
occasions, described him in his book entitled History of the American Pit Bull Terrier (originally published in 1951
and expanded in later editions in the 1960s, already including the description
of Tudor's "DIBO") among
other things, he highlighted the important quality and virtue of the
extraordinary bite he possessed, but he erred in his terminology by using the word
PROGNATHISM or undershot bite, since the correct term for the PREY and GRASP bite that Tudor's
"DIBO" possessed at that time did not exist; it is a modern term,
and calling it PROGNATHISM at that
time tarnished the image of Tudor's
"DIBO" and his lineage in the eyes of those few enthusiasts who
actually knew the true scientific meaning of the term PROGNATHISM. By called Tudor's
"DIBO" in that way, Al
Brown demonstrated his good intentions in portraying a quality and virtue
of the animal in his book, but he also revealed a misconception about the true
meaning of Prognathism, furthermore, to objectively identif,y and diagnose
cases of PROGNATHISM in any type of
dog, it cannot be done by visual inspection alone, it must be diagnosed by a
veterinarian specializing in traumatology through the study, review, and
meticulous evaluation of X-rays taken of the animal's jaws. These X-rays will
allow the veterinarian to observe and assess whether or not there is jaw
displacement, thus enabling a confident diagnosis of PROGNATHISM. It is precisely this jaw displacement that determines
the genetic defect. What can never objectively determine this pathology, as
some ignorant and jaded people believe and claim, is when the lower teeth of
the animal are observed to protrude slightly beyond the upper teeth, as occurs
when the Pit Bull has a PREY and GRIP
bite, but its jaws are perfectly positioned without any displacement.
Many
misunderstandings on this issue arise when Pit Bull owners, due to the
aforementioned custom or tradition, firmly believe they have a PROGNATHIC Pit Bull when it is not.
When, during a visit to their veterinarian (veterinarians are not usually
specialists in traumatology, although they are aware that Prognathism is a
genetic defect), they are told that their Pit Bull has PROGNATHISM, the veterinarian confirms
that their Pit Bull does indeed have a genetic defect. The owner then tells
other fans that his Pit Bull has PROGNATHISM
and confirmed by his veterinarian,
and this is true, but without the veterinarian being a specialist in
traumatology and, more importantly, without any evaluation of the animal's jaws
via X-ray. This bad way reinforces the misconception we are discussing
regarding PROGNATHISM in our beloved
breed, as it is a "confirmation" from a professional veterinary
standpoint. Anyway…
Given Al Brown's good intentions in
describing in his book the quality and virtue of the superior bite or closure
possessed by Tudor's "DIBO"
so that it would not go unnoticed or be forgotten over time, even though he
used the erroneous term PROGNATHISM or
Undershot Bite, we forgive him.
However, to avoid future harmful misunderstandings, the concept should also be
clarified once the error has been acknowledged.
Most
enthusiasts of that era were unaware of the true scientific meaning of PROGNATHISM, but since it had been
coined by someone as respected as Al
Brown, they accepted and normalized the term within the breed over time
without question. Furthermore, breed enthusiasts understood that Al Brown was making a well-intentioned
reference with the term PROGNATHISM
to a quality and virtue: the functional
bite possessed by some of his best dogs, from then on, this quality and
virtue of the mouth closure or bite in the Pit Bulls of those enthusiasts of
that time led them to call the dogs Undershot
Bite or PROGNATHIC, to the point
that this erroneous term became a custom or tradition within the breed
community worldwide, this custom or tradition, as time went on, attracted
countless misunderstandings, controversies, and worst of all, the mistreatment
of thousands of animals due to their owners' ignorance on the matter.
The misunderstanding of Al
Brown's misnomer of PROGNATHISM
attributed to dogs with the best functional bite, occurred simultaneously and in
a similar way to the misunderstanding
of the name in the featured photograph of Tudor's
"RED BILL", which, we had assumed since those distant times was Tudor's "DIBO". I believe
that what is incorrect, even if it has become normalized for whatever reason,
is never too late to be corrected. Once the error is recognized, the power of
Truth will do the rest. Sooner or later, one way or another, Truth always
prevails ❤
