The TUDOR'S "DIBO" true story. By Mariano Peinado (1999).

After researching the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) during my trips to the USA in the 1990s, I discovered almost by chance, and to my great surprise, who, in my opinion, was the breeder of Tudor's " Dibo", the best APBT of all times. I say "to my great surprise" because this information isn't found in books or magazines, at least not until now. This information can only be heard directly from older dogmen , those with a long-standing tradition and an honest reputation within the APBT community in the USA, who were somehow present at the events I will now describe.

APBT enthusiasts generally consider Reverend Howard Heinzl to be the breeder of Tudor's Dibo; this same statement can be found in many APBT books and magazines from that time to the present day.

https://www.fiapbt.net/historiadibo_archivos/image028.jpg Earl Tudor and Howard Heinzl in 1956.

Howard Heinzl was known for his honesty as a breeder and for the good genetic quality of his APBTs, ever since he began his journey with this dog breed back in the 1930s.

In late 1950, Al Brown had sent a very good dog to Heinzl, and the Reverend wished to breed it with Heinzl's Bambi and give two puppies from that already excellent litter to Al Brown in return for the dog he had sent. Heinzl also raised horses; it was his other passion. Howard Heinzl had to leave town for a while on horse-related business in mid-January 1951, just as Bambi was coming into heat. Mr. W.D. Smith was working for Heinzl on his ranch taking care of the dogs at that time. Heinzl entrusted Smith with ensuring that Bambi was bred while he was away, using the dog Al Brown had sent him, as that was his wish.

Smith tried to breed Bambi with Al Brown's dog, but he was a very rough dog and uncooperative. Bambi didn't like him and tried to fight him. However, in Howard Heinzl's yard was another of the Reverend's stud dogs, Hubbard 's Bounce. Smith knew this dog was good and also well-liked by Howard Heinzl, but the Reverend wasn't entirely convinced about Bounce, as he had doubts about some of his sisters, which made him a less than certain choice for breeding.

Smith decided to try breeding Bambi with Hubbard's Bounce and Bounce proved more cooperative, readily accepting his advances. When Heinzl returned from his trip and Smith informed him that Bambi had been bred by Bounce and not Al Brown's dog, he became furious. When Bambi gave birth to her puppies, the enraged Reverend got rid of them all.

The puppies were born on March 21, 1951, the very first day of spring. The arrival of spring that year carried a special message, foreshadowing something very interesting that was about to happen in the American Pit Bull Terrier breed. Al Brown took a male and a female from the litter as compensation for sending his dog to Heinzl under the agreement to breed Bambi with him, an agreement that ultimately fell through, even though he knew the sire of these puppies wasn't his dog (one was named "Boo" and later became Langham 's "Lil" and   the other was "Arizona Pete"). He gave another male to Ed Ritcheson, naming him Ritcheson's Jerry. And Howard Heinzl gave another male puppy (our protagonist) to some friends of his son, who in turn gave him to a child. This child was named Dumbo.

It so happened that the boy, after watching the Lassie the Collie television series, fell in love with the breed and asked his father to trade Dumbo for a Collie. The boy's father spoke with Howard Heinzl to explore the possibility of exchanging Dumbo for a Collie. Heinzl had mixed feelings about Dumbo, as he had some doubts about the quality of some of his paternal aunts (Hubbard 's Bounce's sisters), but he agreed to the trade, given that Heinzl had no doubts about Dumbo 's parents , Bounce and Bambi. The reverend found a Collie in town for Jensen for five dollars. Heinzl and Jensen finalized the dog exchange, and Jensen left very happy, thinking he had made a great deal.

https://www.fiapbt.net/historiadibo_archivos/image031.jpg Hubbard's Lena (Grandmother and great-great-grandmother of Tudor's " Dibo")

At that time DUMBO was already two years old and wandered calmly and uncontrollably throughout the Reverend's yard. He did not approach the chained dogs that showed aggression towards him, since DUMBO had the mind of a puppy in an adult's body and only wanted to play.

Dumbo lived as a pet in Heinzl's yard until he was three and a half years old. He accompanied Heinzl on his work at the kennel and was his family dog. One day, Howard Heinzl received a visit from Earl Tudor, who had cometo pick up a dog from the Reverend's Yard. Given their friendship, Heinzl offered him the choice of any of his best dogs, and Earl Tudor didn't hesitate to choose Dumbo. Earl Tudor was renowned among dog men for having a sixth sense for spotting dogs with gameness at aglance.

Since Earl Tudor didn't like the name DUMBO because of its difficult pronunciation, as he wasn't a Native American, he changed it to DIBO , which was similar but easier for him to pronounce. From that moment on, the name Tudor 's DIBO began to exist in the history of the American Pit Bull Terrier, which in a few years would become known worldwide.

Tudor's "DIBO" was stolen from Earl Tudor shortly after he acquired him from Howard Heinzl and sold to a  restaurant owner who renamed him "Runt". Earl Tudor managed to find and reclaim DIBO at the age of four. These experiences, along with other events, helped DIBO mature and develop a different perspective on dogs who tried to harass him. As a side note, DIBO was a three-time winner in the 44-pound (19.976 kg) weight class.

Given the qualities and virtues that Dibo possessed, he stood out among the best APBTs of that era. But what enriched the breed most through him was the positive and dominant way he transmitted his powerful genetic makeup to his offspring. It didn't matter which bitch he was bred with, even if she was of poor quality; he produced excellent offspring with all of them. Of particular note is the mating of Tudor 's DIBO with what is, in my opinion, the best APBT bitch of all time, Carver's “BLACK WIDOW. As a result of this pairing, extraordinary APBTs were born, having inherited their parents' magnificent qualities and virtues, especially as breeders with a strong, positive dominance of their powerful genetic makeup, which they in turn transmitted to their descendants. Some of the APBTs from the litter of Tudor 's DIBO and Carver's BLACK WIDOW were: Carver´s BLACK GIRL, Carver's CRACKERCarver's DEECarver's LASSO.

For all these reasons, most of the top breeders of the time rushed to breed their females with DIBO. Breeders of that era, and others not so long ago, took Tudor's Dibo as the backbone and standard to follow in their various APBT breeding programs, including: Maurice Carver, Howard Heinzl, Earl Tudor, John Fonseca, Leo Kinard, Ralf Greenwood, George Saddler, Ronnie Hyde, Don Maloney, James Crenshaw, McCool, Enrique Morfín, Jim Twardowski (R-Gang's), D. Stubbs, Ruben Valenzuela, Gary Hammonds, Bert Sorrel, Floyd Boudreaux, William Lacefield, Pat Patrick, Indian Sonny, Scotty Nelson, Don Mayfield, and many more.

Tudor's DIBO died in 1958, andit couldbe said that DIBO is the "patriarch" of most modern American Pit Bull Terriers (APBTs). The more of his genetic makeup is found in today's APBTs, the more original and genuine they are within their breed. Of all the breeders, Maurice Carver best understood how to take advantage of Tudor's DIBO, maintaining, preserving, and refining them for many years in his kennel through the genetics of his dogs. Thanks to Carver, Tudor's Dibo's genetics can still be found in the blood of some APBTs today.

Even though DIBO 's parents were owned by Reverend Howard Heinzl, and although DIBO 's parents were bred at his yard and the litter was also born there, in my opinion, I don't consider Howard Heinzl the legitimate breeder of Tudor's "DIBO" since he didn't make the decision to carry out that cross. Howard Heinzl certainly played a significant role in the creation of Tudor's DIBO, but from my own perspective, the breeder of Tudor's "DIBO" was undoubtedly Mr. W.D. Smith, as he was the one who actually performed the cross, and despite the circumstances, he was the only one who made the decision to do it.

Despite any discrepancies this story may have, I believe that the person who decides to breed a male and female should always be considered the breeder of the litter, even if the mated dogs are not their property. This decision is based on whatever criteria they deem appropriate, whether valid or not. The person who decides to breed two animals will be solely responsible for the genetic quality of those future American Pit Bull Terriers (APBTs), and only time will tell if that decision was made correctly.
